Expectations

Scale the Expectations

Vancouver is packed full of opportunity and is also a very competitive place in terms of jobs. I had a friend who moved here about a year before I arrived so I was somewhat aware of the snags along the way and was mentally prepared. The influx of immigrants here is huge so naturally the market becomes full of contenders across the board. It is also packed full one niches. It would be best to spend some time and research before you arrive. Service jobs are also available and are mostly dominated by female individuals with good looks and age category 16 through 30. For these of us outside that framework – keep looking.

Come Prepared
Having said that, we do not mean to discourage anyone. Do some homework from overseas and follow the local media. Joining some LinkedIn groups in the area would be a good idea since they talk about current trends, products and point to various other links. There will be a separate post on how to network and which resources come in handy and facilitate that.

Weather
Vancouver is at the foot of the mountain so be prepared for rain and unpredictable conditions. Breathable, waterproof materials for shoes and jackets appear to work best so far. Due to the price levels in town (many wealthy people from overseas come and pay whatever price), bring these items along and save hundreds of dollars here. Sunglasses with orange or yellow lenses would be a best-fit due to the large number of overcast days. Day trips to the US are also an excellent way to get proper gear at regular prices.

Attitude
We will be bringing this up continually through this site as this is a differentiator for success and personal and professional happiness. Be curious and learn the local lingo, food (Nanaimo bars for example etc.) and even some style. Vancouver once almost won the contest for the most tasteless in dress style – you will not see this downtown in the business district. It is evident at parties though. Have this in mind when dressing in this city if you want to stand out or blend in.

I have a problem with the overall premise of your article but I still think its really informative. I really like your other posts. Keep up the great work. If you can add more video and pictures can be much better. Because they help much clear understanding. 🙂 thanks
